Andy Reid has never been one for the sexy pick, the phan favorite. Draft preparation is very methodical and very CIA-like without wanting anybody to figure out your method of operations. It’s like trying to guess the next time Raul Ibanez will get a hit, nobody knows. Case and point Donovan McNabb when the entire world wanted the next Jim Brown in Ricky Watters. Or what about head case Shawn Andrews when we traded up perfectly to snatch Steven Jackson. You can now point to 2011 when most phans were screaming for some pass defense help, Reid followed true to his “build the trenches” mentality and snatched offensive lineman, Danny Watkins, with the 23rd pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
The Phillies come home after having a successful road trip going 5-2 despite losing two of the final 3 games. They were able to get great pitching in the Padres series and the bats started to come alive at the end of the series in Arizona. After being shutout and only getting 3 hits in the 1st game, they were able to score 13 runs on 24 hits in the final 2 games of the series. The hitting turnaround has to be taken with a grain of salt because they were playing in a hitter’s park and facing the team with the highest ERA in baseball. But regardless of the circumstances, it can only be seen as a positive to see Howard and Rollins starting to swing the bat well.
It happened again, after a team put up multiple goals, the coach signaled for a goalie change. But this time it was different. It wasn’t the Flyers backup goalie stretching and getting ready to enter the game. It was Sabres backup goalie Jhonas Enroth. The Flyers had scored 4 goals on just 28 shots against the former Vezina Trophy winning goal tender Ryan Miller. From the start, the most intimidating fans in hockey where all over Miller and were more than thrilled to watch him leave the game. It was fitting that the guy who had won two games on his own, had to watch the game as his season came to an end.
This is the kind of numbers we thought this rotation could accomplish when Lee was signed during the offseason. Today Halladay came within one out of the complete game and helped the Phillies sweep the 4 games series in San Diego. The Phillies have now won 11 straight games at Petco Park. The Phillies pitchers pitched a total of 38 innings during the 4 games series and only gave up 3 runs.Doc was able to rebound in a big way after a poor start against the Brewers last Tuesday night. He struck out 6 Padres hitters at one stretch of the game, and when Charlie finally lifted him in the 9th, he had recorded 14 strikeouts.
On April 19th, 2009 newly acquired left fielder Raul Ibanez hit a two-run walk-off home run to help the Phightin Phils beat the San Diego Padres. Later in April Ibanez hit a grand salami during an eighth inning comeback over the Washington Nationals. The Rauuuuuuullllls were loud and often. The man, with tough shoes to fill after phan favorite Pat Burrell departed town, wasted no time grabbing the adoration of the Philly phaithful.
The lockout has put a damper on the usually exciting time in the NFL, it will also force teams to change the way they approach the offseason Usually they can fill some needs via free agency and then fill the rest through the draft. But with the lockout putting the free agency period on hold for now, teams will be forced to do it the other way. The 1st round of the NFL draft is less than a week away and will take place next Thursday evening. The 2nd and 3rd rounds will be completed next Friday while the remaining rounds will be completed on Saturday. It is no secret that good drafts are essential in building a championship contender.
With Thursday nights Game 3 loss to the Miami Heat in the 1st round of the playoffs it is no secret that the 76ers will NOT be the next to be crowned Champion in the city of Brotherly Love. Unless the impossible becomes possible we have to look to the more viable options in the city, that being the Flyers and Phillies.
The series took a bad turn in the 12th inning of Monday Nights Game. After the Phillies were able to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th off of a Pete Orr single, Kyle Kendrick imploded on the mound. At first he couldn't throw strikes, then he threw a sacrifice bunt attempt into right field, then he decided he wanted to throw what looked like batting practice to the Brewers hitters. Kendrick’s performance looked like he had been spending most of the night eating dollar dogs in the bullpen. The following night didn't go much better for the Phillies pitchers.
Yesterday the Phillies proved why it will be difficult for the team to go on a prolonged losing streak at some point this season. The reason is PITCHING. After the bullpen spoiled a solid start by Roy Oswalt Friday, Hamels went out and tossed a great 7 innings of baseball only giving up 2 runs. They used some timely hitting and a bit of luck to take the lead in the 8th inning on a sac fly off the bat of Chooch. A loss would have placed them in tie for 1st place in the division with the fish, but instead they send the Marlins out of town trailing by 2 games. The rain out on Saturday made a series win impossible but they continued their streak of not losing a series with the victory yesterday. They are now 4-0-1 in the 5 series they have played this season.
Shock the world is the common theme any underdog lives by when faced with an insurmountable challenge. In order for the 7th seeded 76ers to beat the Miami Heat in the first round of the NBA Playoffs the Sixers will need to “shock the world.” The Sixers did their best on Saturday night in Game 1 to come out firing on all cylinders jumping out to an early lead with a 31-point first quarter. At the end of the first quarter the Sixers led 31-19 leaving most fans in American Airlines Arena feeling like they were witnessing a potential upset instead of witnessing “greatness,” or whatever Prince James is suppose to resemble.
