Hockey is a sport where the forwards and goaltenders get the majority of the attention and then whatever is left goes to the defense. With the exception of big time players like Pronger and Chara, your casual hockey fans rarely notice the defenseman unless they make a huge mistake. Even less attention is given to those defenders who are not goal scorers. With the Flyers Captain out indefinitely with concussion issues, the young flyers team has looked to veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen. He wears one of the Alternate Captain (A) patch and is very quietly one of the team’s most important players. His leadership and savvy defensive play land him at #13 on BLN’s best athlete in Philadelphia.
It is hard to imagine baseball in Philadelphia without Jimmy Rollins. The man who has pioneered a losing team, 9 playoff appearances from 1883-2000, to a Championship team, 5 straight division titles, a National League title, and 2008 World Series Champs, since J-Roll became a regular in 2001. When it came down to it Jimmy Rollins wasn’t going anywhere, no matter the money. Philly is home, it’s where he has spent nearly half of his life playing the game he loves. Despite being on the “downside” of his playing career J-Roll still belongs at #14 of the Best Athletes in Philadelphia. Jiiimmmmmmyyyyyy!!
