As the trade deadline looms in late February rumors continue to circulate about what kind of splash the 76ers will make. A certain player with a remaining $40 million on his contract seems to be the kingpin in any deal made but his poor start and price tag have made it hard for Stefanski to maneuver. With speculation that Iguodala has approached the team and asked for a trade it seems that both parties would like to part ways. With the presence of Detroit Piston Tayshaun Prince on the open market with a less hefty price tag it could cause even more snags for the Sixers. My solution is quite simple: Trade Iguodala at all costs.
Iggy is scheduled to make $12.3 million in 2010/2011, $13.5 in 2011/2012, $14.7 in 2012/2013 with a player option of $15.9 in 2013/2014 and I haven’t even mentioned Elton Brand who is lucratively on the payroll until 2013. The solution is dump money the best and fastest way you can. It is going to be near impossible to move a slower/older Elton Brand with that price tag but Iguodala in his 7th season is an attractive piece to any championship contending team. He has athleticism and above the rim flash but lacks in consistent perimeter shooting and lacks the killer instinct to make him a clutch go-to scorer. He is better suited as a third scorer for a team such as Dallas or New Orleans.
The Sixers have a nucleus of young talent that they can build on but a tight wallet that limits what they can do. With so much invested money in Iguodala and Brand there has to be a payroll cut somewhere and Iggy seems to fit the bill perfectly. A shot in the dark would be trading both Iguodala and Brand to Dallas for expiring contracts like that of Caron Butler. This would free up a ton of money for the Sixers and give the Mavs two additional pieces for a title run. The improved play of Brand as of late could make this long shot happen and Iguodala would fill the shoes of Butler in Dallas. Is there any way to sell teams on the Brand of his Clipper days where he consistently averaged 20 and 10?? Doubt it.
The most realistic trade will only involve Iggy so I won’t keep my fingers crossed that both him and Brand are traded. The Portland Trail Blazers could be a team looking hard at Iguodala this month and I say let’s make a deal. The Blazers are in need of some help for Brandon Roy and Iggy could provide that relief they are looking for to make a playoff push.
Blazers get: Andre Iguodala
Sixers get: Nicolas Batum (who has had a breakout month in January averaging 15.9 points while shooting 47.4 from the field and 36.8 from 3-point range) as well as the expiring contract from Joel Przybilla
There are a ton of Iguodala trade scenarios circulating and this is just one of many that I think works. To be honest if it means dumping money I don’t care who we trade Iggy to and who we get in return. Less money and a younger player equals success in my book, so Ed you got some work to do.
